First Person- When the player is seeing through the eyes of his/her character (E.g. Half-Life, Medal of Honor). In written literature the words I and me come into play.

Second Person- Not used in video games, so don't get confused. In written literature the word you or your is used.

Third Person- When the player sees his/her character in the world. In written literature words such as his, her, him, and he are used.

RPG- An acronym for Role-Playing Game. An RPG is traditionally a game where the player creates his/her own character and said character can level-up in experience levels and learn new abilities. (E.g. Morrowind, EverQuest) However, some games that have a set character and/or no experience levels can still be thought of as an RPG. (E.g. Zelda, LOTR: The Third Age)

FPS- An acronym for First-Person Shooter or Frames Per Second. In order for a game to be considered an FPS it must both have shooting elements and be in the first person perspective. If it is referring to Frames Per Second, it means basically what it sounds like. Depending on context the term FPS could be used either way.

HUD- HUD stands for Heads-Up Display. It's the readings of your health, ammo, or other readings. HUDs are most commonly used in FPS games.

Real Time- When something is affected by time. Examples can be that day turns to night in real-time (which may not mean in an actual 24-hour cycle, but they do go from day to night, night to day during gameplay). It also refers to the actual time spent playing the game (real-time graphics versus cinematic graphics which are prerendered).

Prerendered- When the graphics were rendered beforehand. If you watch a cinematic in a game and it has better graphics than what you see in the game, it's prerendered.

Game Life- The amount of time a game normally takes to complete.

Lag- Lag is a term used most-commonly by computer nerds/geeks such as myself. Lag refers to the slow-down of frame-rate or response time that a game has when playing online.

Ping- Ping refers to the amount of time it takes for the server you're playing on to get back to your console/PC. Ping is reduced depending on how close the server's location is to you (E.g. If you are on the east coast and the server's PC is as well) The lower the ping, the better your game will respond. For instance, if you have a ping of 150 and your opponent has a ping of 40, that person will be able to see you well before you see him (perhaps 4 or 5 seconds before) which can make all the difference in a high-paced shooter.

VO- VO stands for voice-over. A voice-over is basically the recorded voices of the cast.
